Anahera Press is delighted to announce that we have just produced a limited print run of Jess Holly Bates’ first poetry collection, REAL FAKE WHITE DIRT. Based on a stage show she is taking to London, Edinburgh Fringe, and New York this year, Jess has penned an unsettling commentary on the quality of whiteness and history of colonialism in New Zealand. This book is an engaging, powerful, painfully funny and challenging read. Jess Holly Bates is a Pākehā performance poet, writer, actor and theatre-maker. (The book is available here.)

Anahera Press is very pleased to announce that our next poetry book publication will be The Art of Excavation by Leilani Tamu. This stunning debut collection is, like its author, fierce and political, not to mention tender and perceptive, and we are proud to be its publisher. The book is a vibrant and challenging offering from a young Pacific woman writer who is also a mother, historian, former diplomat and columnist. In 2013 the author was Fulbright-CNZ Pacific Writer in Residence at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Available at all good New Zealand bookstores, ebook available via Amazon out now. Launching 12 August 2014.

Over the last few months we have been pleased to receive positive reviews of Kiri Piahana-Wong’s debut poetry collection night swimming from a variety of media around New Zealand. Here is a selection!

Hamesh Wyatt in The Otago Daily Times: “Night swimming is full of brilliant moments that give a new sense of understanding. A reader will find the gold very easily in this little collection in which she gives voice to her Maori, Chinese and English ancestry.”

Siobhan Harvey in Beattie’s Book Blog: “Night swimming is a collection abundant with striking imagery and imagination. It marks a promising debut by an author carving out her own distinctive themes and ideas.”

Sarah Dunn in The Nelson Mail: “It’s a reflective collection, full of gentle currents that swirl and twist.”

Vaughan Rapatahana in The Landfall Review Online: “A near-perfect 9.5 leap from the high board.” [re the poem ‘I miss you like’]

Is this a publishing company or a band?? Last Thursday Anahera Press headed out to artist Rewi McLay’s whare in Mt Albert, West Auckland. We were there to photograph Rewi’s gorgeous painting, ‘Manu Ahi’, which is to be used as the basis of the cover of Ben Brown’s forthcoming poetry collection, ‘Between the Kindling and the Blaze.’ Our photographer also took the opportunity to snap a few shots of Ben, and just as we were leaving, captured this Outrageous Fortune-style moment outside Rewi’s house. On left, publisher Kiri Piahana-Wong; in middle with guitar, Rewi McLay; and on right, author Ben Brown. Image credit Rowan Klevstul.
