Anahera Press to publish novel by Apirana Taylor

We are delighted to announce that in 2016 Anahera Press will publish a novel by distinguished Māori writer Apirana Taylor entitled Five Strings.

The novel is a love story about two alcoholic drug addicts, Puti and Mack, and the hidden tragedy that Puti rediscovers as she finally puts her smashed mind together. It is set in the seedy tough underground world of people who live on the fringes of society, and is a compelling read!

Apirana Taylor, of Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Ngati Porou and Taranaki descent, is one of New Zealand’s foremost writers. He has published several collections of poetry, short stories and novels. He has also published prolifically in other mediums including sound and video recordings. He writes for children and theatre, and is involved in acting, and teaching drama. Apirana’s first collection of poetry, Eyes of the Ruru, established his powerful voice among Māori writers, and his prose, written predominantly in realist modes, firmly established his literary presence.

This is the first novel the press will produce and we’re looking forward to it! More details, including release date, to follow.

Māori poets: call for submissions

02 Tuesday Jun 2015

Anahera Press has recently been informed about an interesting opportunity for Māori poets! Call for submissions: The Auckland Latin American Community Inc. (ALAC) plans to publish a book of Māori poetry translated into Spanish. They believe this is the first time a publisher has attempted to bring Māori poetry to the Spanish-speaking world. Māori poets are invited to submit unpublished poetry ideally in te reo with an English translation, but English only is ok if that is not possible. Poems will appear in the book in te reo, English, and Spanish. Deadline for receiving expressions of interest is 30th June. Email Esteban Espinoza at fideluna@gmail.com.

To date Anahera Press has focussed exclusively on publishing poetry books, but we are now considering branching out and publishing short story collections as well. To this end, Kiri is undertaking a reading marathon surveying some of the world’s finest short story books – including Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, Albert Wendt’s Ancestry, and Tina Makereti’s Once Upon a Time in Aotearoa – in order to get a handle on the genre. 10917171_10152663123302984_3800314557240808641_o
