Māori poets: call for submissions

Anahera Press has recently been informed about an interesting opportunity for Māori poets! Call for submissions: The Auckland Latin American Community Inc. (ALAC) plans to publish a book of Māori poetry translated into Spanish. They believe this is the first time a publisher has attempted to bring Māori poetry to the Spanish-speaking world. Māori poets are invited to submit unpublished poetry ideally in te reo with an English translation, but English only is ok if that is not possible. Poems will appear in the book in te reo, English, and Spanish. Deadline for receiving expressions of interest is 30th June. Email Esteban Espinoza at fideluna@gmail.com.

New book announcement

Today at Anahera Press we are delighted to announce that our next publication will be a short story and poetry collection by Serie Barford entitled Entangled Islands. This title will be launching in both print and ebook editions towards the end of this year. Serie is a performance poet of Samoan, Celtic, Scandinavian and Algonquin Indian ancestry. She was born in Aotearoa in 1960 and grew up in West Auckland on the Te Atatu (the dawn) Peninsula. Serie has previously published a collection of poetry, Tapa Talk (2007), and has been published widely in journals and anthologies.

Ebook announcement

We’re very happy to let our readers know that we now have two of our titles available for download as ebooks in the Amazon Kindle Store: Night Swimming by Kiri Piahana-Wong and The Art of Excavation by Leilani Tamu. Both ebooks are up for sale at a price considerably cheaper than the print list price so if you’re interested in these books this is a great way to acquire them. (Don’t have a Kindle? Not to fear, download the free Kindle app from Amazon and you will be able to read these titles on your smartphone, computer, or tablet.) Happy reading!

The Short Story Project

To date Anahera Press has focussed exclusively on publishing poetry books, but we are now considering branching out and publishing short story collections as well. To this end, Kiri is undertaking a reading marathon surveying some of the world’s finest short story books – including Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, Albert Wendt’s Ancestry, and Tina Makereti’s Once Upon a Time in Aotearoa – in order to get a handle on the genre. 10917171_10152663123302984_3800314557240808641_o

New book release

Anahera Press is delighted to announce that we have just produced a limited print run of Jess Holly Bates’ first poetry collection, REAL FAKE WHITE DIRT. Based on a stage show she is taking to London, Edinburgh Fringe, and New York this year, Jess has penned an unsettling commentary on the quality of whiteness and history of colonialism in New Zealand. This book is an engaging, powerful, painfully funny and challenging read. Jess Holly Bates is a Pākehā performance poet, writer, actor and theatre-maker. (The book is available here.)

New book announcement

Anahera Press is very pleased to announce that our next poetry book publication will be The Art of Excavation by Leilani Tamu. This stunning debut collection is, like its author, fierce and political, not to mention tender and perceptive, and we are proud to be its publisher. The book is a vibrant and challenging offering from a young Pacific woman writer who is also a mother, historian, former diplomat and columnist. In 2013 the author was Fulbright-CNZ Pacific Writer in Residence at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Available at all good New Zealand bookstores, ebook available via Amazon out now. Launching 12 August 2014.
